What happened with the $1.14 million?

The blog This Canada is asking a relevant question: where is the $1.14 million that the Liberal Party had promised to reimburse in the wake of Judge Gomery's first report? In response to Opposition questions on November 25 and November 28 demanding that the government table a copy of the cancelled cheque, both sides of it, in the House of Commons, the Liberals claimed that the $1.14 million had been paid but refused to table a copy of the cheque. So, other than the word of the Liberal Party, is there any independent evidence that the $1.14 million has been paid?

UPDATE 2006-01-19: This Canada points out that CTV's David Akin has obtained a copy of a letter from Public Works and Government Services Canada acknowledging the reception of a $1.14 million cheque from the Liberal Party of Canada.

Thanks, Laurent. David Akin of CTV News has been kind enough to track this down by nailing Steve MacKinnon of the LPC on the issue. The CURRENT answer is here:

However, the CPC (and myself) and commenters to David Akin's blog entry on this subject are, shall we say, somewhat skeptical of this response, having heard it before, and are pressing for the Liberals to produce the cancelled cheque as absolute, indisputable prooof.

This is turning out to be good, clean fun ... on a subject that would have been so easy for the Liberals to have put to bed in November.
