A year ago almost to the day, I wrote a post in which I detailed how immigrant communities had solidly supported the federal Liberal Party in the past and I noted there were signs this support would erode in the 2004 elections. However, according to an analysis of the results of the 2004 elections by the Association for Canadian Studies, this erosion does not seem to have materialized:
Of the three variables emphasized here (immigrant presence, income and education) it is the presence of immigrants that tends to have the most significant impact on the outcome. [...] [T]hose ridings with the highest concentration of immigrants tended to favour the federal Liberals. By consequence [their] presence in Ontario is largely responsible for sustaining Liberal fortunes. Of the 56 ridings where over twenty percent of the population were foreign-born, the Liberals held 48, the NDP took 6 and the Conservatives won 2. In those ridings with less than 20% foreign-born, the Liberals took 27 seats; the Conservatives 21 and the NDP won 2 seats. | Il y a un an presque jour pour jour, j'ai écrit un billet dans lequel j'ai détaillé comment les communautés immigrantes ont solidement appuyé le Parti Libéral fédéral dans le passé et j'ai noté qu'il y avait des signes montrant qu'il y aurait une érosion de cet appui lors des élections de 2004. Cependant, selon une analyse des résultats des élections de 2004 par l'Association d'études canadiennes, cette érosion ne semble pas s'être matérialisée:
