| Léger Marketing's latest poll showing a 54 percent support for sovereignty seems to have been a false alarm. However, even this poll seems to be tame in comparison to the polls which were regularly released in the wake of the failure of the Meech Lake Accord in 1990-91.
Thus, according to a March 1990 IQOP/CJMS poll, 68 percent of Quebecers would have voted YES to the question of the 1980 referendum (mandate to negociate sovereignty with an economic association, monetary union and a second referendum) while 20 percent would have voted NO. According to a March 1990 Sorécom/Soleil poll, 47 percent of Quebecers said they were in favour of the independence of Québec while 38 percent didn't favour it and, according to a May 1990 Angus-Reid/Southam poll, 53 percent were favourable to the separation of Québec. Moreover, according to a February 1990 Sorécom/TVA/Actualité poll, 66 percent of Quebecers said they agreed with the holding of a referendum on the status of Québec while 23 percent disagreed. Also, according to a November 1990 CROP poll, 62 percent of Quebecers said they were for the sovereignty of Québec while 30 percent said they were against. According to a November 1990 Environics/Presse poll, 58 percent of Quebecers were either strongly in favour or somewhat in favour of Québec becoming an independent country and this proportion increased to 66 percent if an independent Québec would have an economic association with the rest of Canada. Selon un sondage Environics/Presse de novembre 1990, 58% des Québécois étaient soit fortement favorables, soit plutôt favorables à ce que le Québec devienne un pays indépendant et cette proportion passait à 66% dans le cas où un Québec indépendant aurait une association économique avec le reste du Canada. Finalement, selon un sondage IQOP/Soleil de septembre 1991, 50% des Québécois disaient que, si il y avait un référendum sur cette question, ils voteraient pour que le Québec devienne un pays souverain alors que 35% s'y opposaient. |
