| Following up on my post on the religious affiliation of Canadian prime ministers, I've put online some data on the religous affiliation of the winner and loser of each federal election.
Some observations:
- From 1867 to 1965, 16 out of 27 elections (59%) pitted two Protestants against one another. There has no been no such election since.
- Before the 1960s, Protestant candidates held their own against Catholic candidates. In 11 elections between 1891 and 1957 featuring a Protestant and a Catholic, the Protestant won 5 elections while the Catholic won 6. In 7 elections since 1968 pitting a Catholic versus a Protestant, the Catholic candidate won all 7.
- The first election to be contested between two Catholic candidates took place in 1979. Since 1968, 4 elections out of 11 (36%) were fought between two Catholic candidates.
| Pour faire suite à mon billet sur l'appartenance religieuse des premier ministres canadiens, j'ai mis en ligne quelques données sur l'appartenance religieuse du gagnant et du perdant de chaque élection fédérale.
Quelques observations:

- Avant les années 1960, les candidats protestants tenaient leur bout face aux candidats catholiques. Sur 11 élections entre 1891 et 1957 où un protestant a affronté un catholique, le protestant a gagné 5 élections et le catholique en a gagné 6. Sur 7 élections depuis 1968 où un catholique a fait face à un protestant, le candidat catholique a gagné les 7.
- La première élection à opposer deux candidats catholiques a eu lieu en 1979. Depuis 1968, 4 élections sur 11 (36%) se sont déroulées entre deux candidats catholiques.
