| The Conservatives did not really get a good score in Québec: about 9%. This is explained among others by the fact that Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party remained relatively little known here (attention was mostly focused on the Bloc and on the Liberals), that the party organization was humble when compared with the electoral machines of the two other parties and that the Conservative Party, even though it understood that it had to offer an alternative to Liberal centralization and to separation, was unable to elaborate on this vision with concrete policies.
This being said, I point out that the Conservatives have obtained respectable scores in the Québec City area. In every riding of this region, they got a proportion of the vote that was higher than their Québec average (see table below), even getting a second place behind the Bloc in two ridings. There also definitely is a small-c conservative streak in this region - the ADQ also gets good results in this region in provincial elections. This could be a promising region for the Conservatives if they can overcome their shortcomings in Québec. | Les Conservateurs n'ont pas vraiment un bon score au Québec: environ 9%. Ceci dit, je souligne que les Conservateurs ont fait des scores respectables dans la région de la ville de Québec. Ils ont obtenu un score supérieur à leur moyenne du Québec pour chacun des comtés de cette région (voir tableau ci-dessous), arrivant même en deuxième derrière le Bloc dans deux comtés. Il y a définitivement un fond conservateur dans cette région - l'ADQ obtient aussi de bons résultats dans cette région aux élections provinciales. Ce pourrait être une région d'avenir pour les Conservateurs si ils peuvent surmonter leurs difficultés au Québec. |
